AIDS MINISTRY
Where: Common Ground is part of a wider AIDS programs located at 139 Ralph McGill Blvd, Suite 103, Atlanta, GA 30308.
When: The AIDS ministry meets at Common Ground on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 11AM. Carpooling is often available.
Mission: to provide acceptance, love and understanding to people living with AIDS in the greater Atlanta Community one heart at a time.
History: The AIDS Outreach program began in the early 90’s at Unity North. The team originally participated in home visits, meal preparation for the homebound, food preparation for Common Ground participants (day program for people living with AIDS –part of the Atlanta Interfaith AIDS Network (AIAN)), Faithful Care Ministries, and AIDS Walk.
Today: With proper care and treatment, people living with AIDS no longer have the grim outlook that once existed. As a result, the AIDS ministry is not currently making home visitations.
The AIDS Outreach program participates monthly in the Common Ground program of AIAN by preparing lunch for approximately 40 people in advance and transports it to their location in downtown Atlanta. The team leads a meditation and discussion, followed by lunch and warm fellowship.
Once a year the team welcomes Common Ground to Unity North’s Friendship Hall for a Christmas celebration with entertainment and gift bags (grooming items and heart gifts) for each participant. Y.O.U. has also participated at Common Ground during the year.
Throughout the year, Common Ground has traditionally been a charity that Unity North has tithed to. The team has long-term, committed members who plan attendance at Common Ground into their month.
Common Ground provides spiritual, emotional and practical support for people living with AIDS through a daily planned program that includes lunch provided by faith communities. The group meets Monday through Friday for educational and counseling programs.
